In the 2020 year of seclusion friends began to share their remembered hideaways of where they spent time alone as girls. As my invitation to tell their stories grew, I noticed how each writer and artist was drawn in and to a conceptual space, and then how each experienced and found there something deeply personal. It was a phenomenon opposite those letters one is sometimes asked to write to offer adult advice to your younger self—rather than a voice from the present addressing the past, these stories and complex artworks offer vivid moments from childhood that inform the present. They go to our deepest knowledge of self-preservation, individuality and creativity that are at the heart of our survival. And we hope they inspire more women to share their memories.
